IMPROSTIVAL 2 - 9 October 2004Modern theatrical improvisation, practiced by thousands in America, Europe, Asia and Africa since the late seventies, is a Theatrical discipline, educational tool and performance art. It certainly merits its own international festival.
This is the objective that we propose for October, a multilingual and multicultural theatrical improvisation festival: THE IMPROSTIVAL. Today, most of the world’s impro festivals are "mono-lingual" - Montreal plays in French, Chicago, London, and Amsterdam in English. For this festival in Paris all participating companies will express themselves in their language of origin. Sometimes even several languages will be used simultaneously in one performance. Our goal is both to present original concepts in their natural language, and to invite the performers to collaborate in performances in the manner of jazz "jam-sessions" for an exceptionally lively festival. Workshops and conferences are included in the festival in order to make improvisational theatre known to – and loved by – the greater public and to allow those that want to deepen their understanding to practice these techniques of playful expression. This first festival will be dedicated to Mr. Keith JOHNSTONE who, in the late 1950s, greatly influenced the renewal of impro-performance. He is the creator of the concept of THEATERSPORTS recognized all over the world. Academic and teacher, he has laid down the theoretical and practical bases of modern improvisation in his main publications "IMPRO" and "IMPRO FOR STORYTELLERS." He will teach an actors workshop and will answer questions from the press and professionals in a conference planned for the 6th October at the FIAP Jean MONNET. In addition Keith JOHNSTONE, who has never before directed in France, will direct a production of a theatrical concept he himself has developed, MICETRO, on the 5th of October at the Theatre ADYAR. Performing in the MICETRO will be professional companies from LOS ANGELES, LONDON, CHICAGO, BELGIUM, SWITZERLAND and, of course FRANCE. This festival mimics theatrical improvisation in its curiosity and openness. Parisian by nature, European by culture - We introduce IMPROSTIVAL! The promoters
